For those that were not there, the first 5(?) bands in the First Section were not allowed to bring on their own (kit) bass drum. (I know the band that played #2 did no need to, because they had 3 percussionist) Later in the contest other bands were allowed to use their own equipment. We were the 3rd band on and only have 2 percussionists. As we were about to set up, they told us that we had to use the equipment provided. We could have easily set up in the 3 minutes allotted, but the official refused to let our equipment on. I don't think the situation effected our band (we placed 6th), but it was hardly fair. They certainly don't expect brass players to walk out and use "provided mutes or horns." And then a few bands down the line, change their minds. I don't want to dredge up the "provided instrument" issue, but if contests are supposed to test the "whole" band, why hinder the percussion section? Thanks for listening.
