Midland Area Venue (fwd)

I am forwarding this message on behalf of a friend who is not (yet)
subscribed on the list. I might add that having played at Nottingham with
the City of Birmingham in the past, I am also in agreement with these
sentiments.

Unlike many of you who have written in, I have seen both sides of
the Midland Area Contest - as a player and as a steward. I am
however, in complete and total agreement with the condemnation of
the venue as one totally unfit for the staging of brass band contests.
It is not a pleasurable venue for either players or organisers (though it
may be convenient travelling distance for the majority of the
committee members!)

I also echo the sentiments of others with respect to the lack of warm-
up area, appalling acoustics, the disgraceful catering facilities, but
those points have already been well covered. My main point
however, is one based upon my working experiences and that
concerns Health and Safety.

If an H & S Inspector was to attend the contest, he or she would call
an immediate halt to proceedings, on the grounds of the access
problems and sheer numbers of persons in the building. I shudder to
think what would happen in the event of a fire or other emergency.
Perhaps that is the line of argument that should be taken in our
efforts to get the venue changed.

Quotation from old North Mids Committee Member I received first
hand "I'd like to see the area split again" and "the South Midlands
Committee was bankrupt when we took them over". Rather confirms
the above contribution doesn't it.
