Greetings, First, I must declare that I am a lover of brass band music, but not a player. Actually, I am a flautist. But, more to the point, I am also a composer, and I would like to write for brass band. More immediately, I have a piece that I would like to arrange for brass band. I would like to hear from those of you who compose and arrange, but not only from those that compose and arrange. I would also like to hear various views on the subject of mutes. Now, I have, of course, played with instruments found in brass bands, as I was a bandsman in high school (thirty years and more ago), and I have heard brass bands live and on disc and on radio. One of the things that I am enjoying reading the contributions to this list is what I must call "brass band culture". Getting a feel for this helps in my thinking about writing for brass. Thank you, all of you, for for this glimpse into a wonderful world. Almost makes me wish I'd played cornet instead of flute... So, I hope you will be able to help me in my humble endeavours.
