Dear Robin

On the subject of mutes. I have always been taught that mutes are there to
change the tone colour and not to alter the volume.

So if you are playing mf with a cup mute in then you should push more air
through the instrument to obtain the same sound.

Of course mutes do help you to blend in with other instruments too
