We played both Purcell Variations(in the 3rd section), and A Caledonian
Journey(4th) at the Leamington contest in December(winning both,
incidentally). Purcell Variations was used as the 1st section regional
test-piece in 95 I think. I'm not sure exactly how good B grade is, but if
it's halfway between the other two pieces, then it should stretch them
quite a bit.
A Caledonian Journey was the 4th section National Finals piece last
September. As a piece of music, it's uninspiring, though it has a nice 4th
movement (Mountain Song), and there is little technical difficulty in it.
The sop. has a nice lyrical tune in the Mountain Song.
