Re: Can I introduce myself and try again?

Hi Mary Ellen,

I'm one of the guilty who ignored you ... sorry. Welcome to the list
....hope it's useful and fun for you ... I'm a "lurker" .. mostly, but I
enjoy the discussions, differences of opinion and, yes, the one-liners!

Some comments below ...

>I am really enjoying the challenge of
>brass band music in general and the alto horn in particular (especially
>trying to tune the darn thing!).

Yes, I sympathize! I play tenor (alto) horn ... a Yamaha 602S ... and
tuning is indeeeeed a problem. (But then, as our director David Druce is
fond of saying, "3 valve instruments are out of tune. Period. So you always
have to work at playing in tune") In Howard Snell's recent book "The
Trumpet: Its Practice and Performance" Rakeway Publications, ISBN 0 9511 961
2 X he provides an alternative fingering chart that I find useful. IMHO it
comes down to finding the fingerings, lip position, mouthpiece, and tuning
slide position(s) that work on your particular horn! BTW, I use a Denis
Wick 2 mouthpiece and find it pretty good overall.

> What other US bands are represented on this list?

Well, there are lots, I believe .... north of the border there are a few,
too! I play with Woods Manufacturing Brass Band in Ottawa, Canada. We're
organized differently for funding so I don't think our model would be of
interest to you. But Janice Larose (a lurker on this list) is our band
manager and might be able to comment. ... Janice?

Again, sorry for not making you welcome, sooner!

Lloyd Hiscock
