I'm a bit of a fence sitter when it comes to contests. I don't particularly like them but I wouldn't want to see them abolished either. However I would like to comment on the recent Aussie Nationals. Firstly, the positives to come out of it for my band was the fact that we worked hard and cemented our place as one of the higher ranked B grade bands. The weekend from a social point of view was great fun and I think we all became closer as friends too. Everyone seems quite enthusiastic about competing in future contests. On the negative side I was disappointed with the adjucator's comments. They were hand written crit sheets - not the tape - and they were extremely generalised and cliched (IMHO). Percussion never got ONE mention at all. Nothing, zilch, zero. The test piece went off without a hitch for percussion but I know I made a few blunders in the own choice and so did my colleague. Our own choice was Connotations and has quite a varied and difficult part for all sorts of percussion. As I listened to our MD reading the crit sheets out at band practice, I actually wondered why I even bothered making the effort with my percussion parts. So from my percussion point of view, the contest itself was a bit "futile". Vicki A. City of Greater Dandenong -- unsubscribe or receive the list in digest form, mail a message of 'help' to
