I think Dyke demonstrated to the world an important aspect of the ethos of brass banding, which is that basic things like fulfilling a firm engagement matter more than clever things like showing off themselves, or brass bands in general, to a billion people. I applaud their action: I think we can all learn something from it, and I suspect a good few of those billion people will respect Dyke, and by extension the rest of us, the more for it. It was such a missed opportunity to promote the brass band sound to an audience that no band may have the potential to play to again. Surely we should be promoting this marvellous artform to a wider general public, to people who may never have even heard a British Style brass band in action before.
