Settle down! I reckon there's a bit of boyband jealousy going on here 
Dave. Are you telling me you'd rather play for Ever Ready than be 
earning millions singing to a bunch of screaming girls? Anyway, I'm 
sure you could form a cracking boyband out of some of your lot (with 
the shedding of a few pounds mind)! 

Seriously though, I think you either love or hate contests. They do 
bring bands together and can encourage the best out of people but 
then again it all depends on the band, piece and conductor. Often if 
the band doesn't like the piece or conductor it can have exactly the 
opposite effect. Something to do with flogging and dead horses 
occasionally springs to mind. I like contests personally, but I like 
doing good concerts too. Some bands just do park jobs and the like 
and don't concentrate on putting in quality performances which is 
probably another thing that drives people away.
