As an ex-trombone player (many, many years ago) and more recently a trumpet and cornet player I am still unsure how to approach the flugel I now play. Having listened to many good brass bands I see the flugel player sitting in several different parts of the band. The sounds I hear also seem to differ greatly. Some players make it sound like a large cornet while others produce a darker richer sound which I find more appropriate for the soprano member of the Saxhorn group. How much of this is instrument..... how much player perception and technique? I know there are several other flugel players on the list and I would appreciate hearing their opinions.
