Piet Durk Meyer writes::: PS: Do you have hints to play high notes more easily? Bruce Jones answers: Support from the diaphragm and plenty of air. The smiling method is flawed. So is diaphragm "support." I suppose basic physiology classes are held in the UK;-) Muscles work in only one direction. The diaphragm works only on INhalation. After that, it's principally the stretched thorax returning to a relaxed state that does the work of blowing. The "smile" method is a poor attempt to get the lips to do their job. For the best description of how the embouchure works, read Denis Wick's book from Oxford U Press. For the physiology of breathing, read SONG AND WIND by Arnold Jacobs as told to Drian Fredriksen.
