This piece was used as a second section test piece at the Regional Finals about three or four years ago. It was originally a second section piece at the National Finals in 1967 (before the days of 'first section' bands). I feel it would be quite a challenging piece for a D grade band. (Good soloists are required). It was once played at a concert I attended and the compere stated that Allan Street had hoped it would have been selected as the Championship Section test piece for the National Finals, but that was not to be. However, it was some consolation when people leaving the contest were whistling or singing the melody written by Allan Street and introduced part way through the piece, as opposed to the original Tchaikovsky theme! The Tchaikovsky piece is Variations on a Rococo Theme for cello and orchestra. -- unsubscribe or receive the list in digest form, mail a message of 'help' to
