I guess Moorside Suite, BBC bandstand (television & radio) and who can forget a little know hit by Grimethorpe a few years back doesn't count <grin>, but really..... Tafflemusic in Toronto is a chamber ensemble, well renowed, has an audience but I don't see hoards of rockers, brass banders, etc., attending their concerts. Brass Band is no different in that it has a following, largely supported by those actively involved in the sport (like minor hockey, basket ball, etc.,). To reach out to mainstream audiences perhaps the Hanneford Band or River City Brass could be used as examples who have expanded the audience beyond those just in the movement. I understand River City has substantial audiences. I had also heard that Black Dyke was invited to the Oscars (turned it down for a local event previously committed <well guys!!! very classy .you got applause when this was mentioned at one of our concerts), if that's not reaching outside the existing idiom and into mainstream, what is?? Perhaps Dave you need to look beyond home borders of Toronto. -- unsubscribe or receive the list in digest form, mail a message of 'help' to
