     Is your band Elland Youth?  If so I heard them on Saturday night at 
     the joint concert with Versatile Brass.

     I thought the band played very well considering their very young age 
     and I thought the two youngsters dressed as nuns were very brave!  It 
     was a great start to the evening.  

     It is the first time I have heard Versatile Brass for a long time and 
     thought that the playing was excellent and the programme was light 
     enough for the type of audience.

Hi all!!!

I've been watching this thread with great amusement!!

Can I just say that I have some great banding experiences through 
contests!! From 4th section to the Championship section. I will never 
forget my first contest. Being petrified throughout most of it!! And then 
hearing the Applause at then end, it was all worth it. The band came last!!

I remember the first contest we won!!! Wow what a feeling.

I also remember the first contest I conducted a band at. 

For me contesting has brought me a lot of good memories and also bad ones, 
when you were robbed!!! Its the team spirit though, working together on a 
piece whether its a "test piece" or "entertainment". 

When I take my band to contests its something to aim for and to encourage 
the youngsters. I find that when they hear bands better than they are it 
gives them something to aim for. Its important to know that there is always 
somebody better at something than you. It helps to keep things in 
perspective.

I think that my views will be appreciated by others on this list.

Also if you don't enjoy contesting etc, then play for a non contesting 
band!!! Its your choice. Please don't try and influence others with your 
views. This is just my view and it really annoys me when I hear people 
comparing brass bands to the likes of orchestras etc. We are diffferent and 
do things differently.
