Re: Black notes/ White notes?

Do black notes play louder than white notes?

You said you were serious so I'll add my 2=A2. I've played piano for 39
years; studied it as a minor while getting my degree in music. I've had 4
great instructors and know many pianists. NEVER have I ever been told to
compensate for extra volume inherent to black keys, nor have I noticed an
y
such phenomena. I asked several people I know who play and they all thoug
ht
I was kidding. The hammers on acoustic pianos harden with age and use and
can cause a harsh brightness if not cared for with regulation of the acti
on
and "voicing" which, if I understand correctly, involves using various
methods of evening out the hardness of the hammers. (Pin pricking into th
e
fabric of the hammer head and possibly liquid softening treatments.
Usually the brightness occurs on the most heavily used notes and that wou
ld
depend heavily on who uses the piano and what is played on it (and in wha
t
keys)
