My husband broke his left shoulder a few years back (showing off to a couple of friends' children, doing wheelies on a mountain bike - unfortunately he forgot that his feet were strapped into toe grips, so when the wheelie went wrong his shoulder took the fall ..... and all on Christmas day!!). Anyway, being very enthusiastic about playing his cornet, after returning from hospital his first intention was to design some sort of device which could hold the weight of the cornet for him. Together with his engineering Father, they utilised a music stand some plywood, padding and a couple of bolts. The music stand gave the ability of altering the height, and the plywood, padding and bolts were fixed onto it and used to grip the valve cylinders of the cornet. Although not as good as 'holding your own', it meant that he could practise at home and then fold the contraption up and take it off to band rehearsal .... maybe we should patent the design!! In line with a recent thread about the non-pressure method, your alternative could be to suspend your sop from the ceiling with a bit of string!!! Hope this helps.
