Bob Childs on Black Dyke

Before I comment on the rumours that have been published on this mailing lis
t
recently, I would like to make it clear that I am commenting as an individua
l
and not as a member of Black Dyke. This is not an official Dyke statement,
mearly my own personal views.

Last Monday Kevin Crockford and Lee Rigg were asked to leave the band by
James Watson.
James Watson told the band that he asked them to leave because they were
obviously not enjoying their music making.
By the following Thursday Bob Blackburn (solo baritone) Graham Williams (2nd
cornet) Mick Green (3rd cornet) and David Altham (1st horn) had resigned.

Unconnected to this issue a few weeks earlier, Phil Shaw (assistant
principal cornet) and Grant Macintosh (3rd man down) resigned for personal
reasons.

The band has not received a Lottery Grant, and has not applied for one. It i
s
however considering applying for one, but it's a long way off yet. In my
opinion the decision to invite women into the band has nothing to do with
this possible application. Incidentally, I whole heartedly welcome women to
the band and I think the decision to do so was long over due.

In previous postings an irresponsible person suggested that players had left
the band after "a large amount of money was discovered missing" This is
absolutely untrue, no money has gone missing at Black Dyke.
It was also suggested that certain individual players were receiving large
remuneration for playing in the band while the majorities were not. I am not
prepared to discuss how much anyone is paid at Dyke, but I can say that
everyone is paid the same travel allowance and that both Kevin Crockford and
Lee Rigg were on the same concert fees as myself.
When I joined the band in 1989? The band was in a terrible state financially
and all the players agreed to play in the band without any financial
remuneration. I was travelling from Hull doing a round trip of 140 miles per
rehearsal. Players play for Dyke because they want to, not because they are
paid large amounts.

Finally, I would like to agree with Sam Harrison in her statement that; "It'
s
excellent that women are now allowed the right to play for Black Dyke". I
don't think women should be allowed in just because they are women=E2=80=A6
=E2=80=A6=E2=80=A6. They
have to be up to the required standard.

I hope this notice clears up some unfounded rumours.
