I was really touched by your story and Im sure you will find a chair.  

However, you say "going to a non-contesting local village band doesn't
really appeal :(("  I hate to rake over all that stuff we've had on here
about contests again, but I still maintain that bands who dont contest
are not necessarily second-rate.  Although if its contesting you like,
thats another issue entirely and you will have to find one that does...

Our band has "NO CONTESTING" in its constitution, and I can assure you
we try VERY hard to improve.  And we are part of the 50% of UK Brass
bands that don't contest.  SO you've got lots of other alternatives, if
you look outside the contesting band box.  The Salvation Army (SA)
doesnt contest either.  Im sure you've heard some of their bands.
