In the same way the Serbs *prefer* not to have Albanians around the place,
or the nailbombers *prefer* not to have black people in Brick Lane?  Do you
not understand that limiting somebody's lifechances, whether its playing in
a band or giving them a job based on criteria that are related to an
accident of birth ie gender, rather than how good they are is oppressive if
you are on the receiving end of it?

I think the point others are making is that preferences that limit
opportunities for others without any objective criteria are discriminatory,
the genocide you mention is the worst manifestation of that process of
people who have power over others expressing it in a discriminatory way - if
you can exclude people, of what ever gender from a band, you have power.
