Re: Women in Brass Bands

A standard of playing is gender neutral, set the bar/standard, measure
against it and don't diminish the quality for any reason.

Several years ago there was a minor uproar in the Soviet Union over the non
award of a first place in the Tchiakovsky solo competition - why? - because
the judges felt no one had reached previously set standards - I say 'good
call' don't diminish the stature of the institution in order to make people
feel good, to appeal to 'political correctness' or to appease sexual
orientation.

To diminish the standard is to diminish all players. Let's talk about
quality, measurement and standard of playing and leave the gender
discussions to physical sports where it may have more substance (and no, my
opinion is no different in the area of sports than it is for banding). A
standard of competence to be achieved in order to gain membership should be
the determining factor, nothing else.
