I recall an article in New Scientist - quite a few years back, no exact date, sorry - which dealt with an experiment someone had done on this subject. He made a shank that could be put in a trumpet mouthpiece socket with a strain-gauge in which would measure applied pressure. The summary of the results was that the professional trumpeters he measured used just as much pressure, or more, than the amateurs of varying experience. The difference was that they didn't *appear* to be pushing so hard, and could do it for longer, presumably because their chops were well and truly hardened by practice. I seem to recollect that he measured a pressure of over 100 lbs (that's around 45kg) from one pro. That's a lot... Ian --
