Do these marches take the form of a street march or are they choreographed or diagram marches? >> Johnboy, Thanks for the email. The march aspect of the contest is a street march or in Cantium's case a street ramble! That part is judged and prizes awarded. There is then a second static march played in a square/outside a pub or similar which is also adjudicated. Certain bands go, I understand, to try and win the marching aspect but most concentrate on the static march. Other concentrate on alcohol consumption. It is to Cantium Brass's credit that while the regular members concentrated on the playing, the concentration of the guest players wavered onto the alcohol from time to time. There is a book on the history of the event called 'Hail Smiling Morn' by Alec Greenhalgh which can sometimes be obtained online from Amazon Books. Martyn Pattinson Bedrock Brass --
