Thanks you all for your input, it is much appreciated. And because
there was so much response, I am documenting my thought process and
investigation so far. If you are reading this from the list and aint
interested, stop reading now.

So far about 10 different products have been suggested and for good or
bad I am currently considering:

Sibelius & Finale if I can buy at a sensible price given its intended
use(Sibelius have offered an educational discount to UKP399 if his music
teacher writes to them because he is not in tertiary education.) Son
has used Sibelius on PC and likes it. I cant justify the price.
Youffers in US can sell me straight Finale 98 at UKP275

Mozart - cheapie but seems to have most of what Mike (son) wants except
transposition and multiple key signatures on one score. Got download
and will investigate

Capella 2000 (dont know anything about this one yet) but in broad price
bracket.

Mike's WIsh List - he wants it to feature:
------------------------------------------

Score & part extraction (handling Brass Bands of course ie Bb, Eb &
Concert in one score)
Good Dynamic notation. Essential! (rules out most cheapies)
Multiple Bar rest notation in one bar
Midi playback (import nice but not essential)
Good printed output (ie not like matrix printer)

I am expecting a comparison document from Graham Wade (mentioned on the
list a couple of days back) and that may change my perspective. But for
now, theres where I am. Any observations?

regards and again thanks for the input.
