There's an interesting project on the go called 'LilyPond' which is a
notation editor. It has its own input language (bad news) which is
concise and versatile (good news). It's free software, and requires that
you have a working copy of TeX (also free). It's much easier to use than
MusiTeX.

It won't accept midi in, but will produce midi out as well as the score.
If there are any TeX users out there, it's worth a look:

If you've never used or heard of TeX, it's probably not worth loading it
just for Lilypond.
