Speaking from this side of the pond, I can only agree with David that serving on committees is a thoroughly thankless task. Having said that, anytime rules are stretched, not applied uniformly, or changed arbitrarily, you get on very tenuous ground. I certainly recognise how seriously you take your contests but can't help but reiterate that a dedication to getting better music and better srrangements would be of greater service to the brass band world than all this rules discussion. I have just had a tape playing in my office of Malcolm Arnold arrangements and compositions and listened to all at once, it is a pretty dreary mishmash of technical flourishes with very infrequent passges of interesting music. Lets face it, most of us in brass bands play for the challenge of the music with little concern for the quality. The music of the SA is in general much more appealing and accessible, at least to me. YBS Essays I and II are the prime examples. Also the great reception Spiritual to the Bone is getting all over the world. My rant for the month. Dave Buckley. --
