Hi there! With regard to test pieces and bands having difficulties to play them. I have played in the National Finals 3 times....twice in the fourth section and once in the third. We found the test pieces to be a challenge and we made a good job of them...improving the band all the time. So much so that in 4 years we moved up 3 sections. However, the hardest piece we played was in section 4 in 1995 when the test piece was Gilbert Vinters Vizcaya. Out of about 20 bands the adjudicators made a comment that he had only heard a couple of bands play the piece..on this occasion we came 2nd (Elland Silver). I remember listening to some of the bands as they just stuggled around with this piece. I know it is supposed to be a test..but bands have worked hard to get to the finals and we all know that the standard of playing in lower section bands varies throught the country...so why can't something be found where the majority of bands will play the piece and be able to put a bit of style and interpretation into it. I'm sure a band would feel far more successful if they could make a good job of it. Especially when we all know what adjudication can be like...at least you would come away feeling satisfied with your performance. Which I feel is the most important key to contesting...being satisfied when you come off stage. But..."Three Figures" has been chosen so we'll have to see what the bands make of it. But is a shame for the bands who may have to consider withdrawing due to the difficulties of the music. Sam --
