The change to "may be invited to the National Finals" is recent - at one
time, the only way to get to the finals was to come first or second in your
region - you then earned the right to go to the finals. IMHO and possibly
that of most bands who enter the regional contests, it should  still be a
right, not a privilege. If there is now no link between your regional result
and the invitation, one could ask "why bother then with the regional
competition?". Why not invite the top 2 bands from each section from each of
the local associations?
