Killian Power is right. Contesting can become an obsession to some bands instead of a hobby. The general public regard them as trivial events and are not interested. How many national papers even report the National results ? No-one cares any more and the band movement in G.B. needs some new ideas. Can anyone tell me how much a band demands now for a concert. This summer a large theatre on the N.Wales coast do not have ONE band concert in its programme compared to last year when Dyke,Faireys, and others were booked. Organisers tell me they are too expensive and did,nt pay. Even bands that have had substantial lottery funds seem more interested in contesting than giving a concert. Recently I was told that a local hospital for the first time could not afford a local band for their annual garden fete; the fee was too high ! There are lots of folk who would rather see lottery money go the N.H.S. instead of the arts or brass bands. What awful public relations. I have heard of one band asking for 50,000 for a new set of instruments (for children)...and they have,nt even got a bass player. Back to contests..I notice Sellers International did not do very well at the Masters....but a few days later they gave a terrific concert for folk in Huddersfield Town Hall. That's what I call banding ! David Williams. --
