Hi, William and all!

We (Illinois Brass Band) have been warming up using the old Salvation Army
hymn books (the little red ones).  The hymn tunes are good for getting the
air moving through one's horn and also the harmonies are simple and make it
easy to judge one's intonation.  

Our MD often asks us to play a hymn in a way not indicated in the book.  For
example, we might be asked to play all the notes staccato, or as duplets or
triplets.  Sometimes we play the whole thing as ppp as possible and
sometimes as fff as possible.  There is quite alot that can be done with
them!

The only problem might be in obtaining them, but you might enquire of your
local SA band librarian...
