Re: Area Pieces

Colin Randle is right about the "old" test pieces. It was possible to
listen to most bands playing Gilbert Vinter's compositions...enjoy them
immensely and remember them ! And "Les Preludes", Resurgam, etc. are still
being used as concert items. In contrast , at last year,s championship
event at Pontin's a colleague and I went home after listening to a couple of
bands; we cannot even remember the name of the piece except that the solo
cornet in one movement had to get a top C sharp (!) double pp.....and some
bands had to engage top cornet players for the day. If the composer reads
this please accept my apologies ; I'm sure it was a good "test" for the
bands. But I think the "old" test-pieces were more enjoyable to listen to
and play. One piece (for lower sections) I recall playing was Allan
Street,s "Nottn,m Town" which was great fun to play, nice to listen to, with
a lovely sop.melody in the 2nd movement, and the young percussionist had
great fun...even firing a gun ! It has even been recorded on an album and
I have heard military band's playing it. David Williams.
