In the hands of a good arranger in combo with the flugel and soprano some interesting results are to be had. Many arrangements and compositions use this comination much like a brass section while the solo cornets play the "violin" parts. The fact that the SA does not use it probably says more about their traditions than the rep being useful or not. By and large the non SA scoring is more inventive and varied when a good arranger (for example Gordon Langford) is at work. A bad rep player makes the sop and flug players life Hell. This player must be able to play solos and is certainly more important than the 3rd and 4th chair solo cornets.
