Bridgewater Hall

Hello
This is my first time writing to the list though I have read it with great
interest for many months. I used to play myself but a busy work schedule
meant that I could no longer give the commitment required, so I took to
listening instead.
With all the recent changes in top bands I went along to Bridgwater Hall,
Manchester, to see what effects, if any, it had had on certain bands.
I listened to the varied programmes selected by each band, the hi-light for
me was the first section played by Williams Fairey Band. The Faireys jigsaw
puzzle looks to be complete, I thought the whole band was excellent, a
settled happy team. I was particularly impressed by the soprano cornet
player Kev Crockford, who said he couldn't play quietly? I'd have to ask "
do you actually ever listen to all of his playing or do you just listen out
for the loud bits?" Journey into Freedom was fantastic. In my humble
opinion, Kevin's playing was superb, he doesn't appear to miss Black Dyke,
but, I ask myself, do they miss him?
I was under the impression that the music for this festival was to be more
on the "serious" side, so, whilst entertaining (though we've heard it all
before) I felt that Black Dyke didn't show us the quality and versatility
that we have all come to expect from them! I read with interest in the
British Bandsman that they have no less than fifteen new players, a massive
upheaval to any band.
I look forward to this years British Open with great excitement.
Good luck to all competing bands!!!!
