This raises a sore point for me recently as we were given a bum rap in a recent competition. The Devonport Eisteddfod Entertainment Contest usually gets a different adjudicator from our normal competitions and this time was no exception. I'm not sure of the level of information that he had been given, but I would say that it was insufficient. Taking nothing away from the winning band, who put on a very entertaining performance, with some good playing (and a whole singing/dancing show), the gripe I had was the adjudicator actually saying "I was looking for something more than a concert programme linked together with some thematic dialogue. Therefore those that played the best music won't appear high in the ratings." An understatement! We were undoubtably the best performers there (being the only A grade band for a start helps) and some of our soloists in particular put on a stirling performace. We came second last. I was finally looking forward to doing this competition without having to resort to cheap special effects and all that yadda. Just play some great music well. And that's the thanks we get. On another issue, in the solo section, there is an award for "Most Oustanding Brass Performance of the Day" which is traditionally given to the person who achieved the highest points (although I can remember one other occasion where it was given to another player who put in a fine performance). This year, this guy (a piano player I am led to believe) gave it to a junior player who we think came second in the 13 to 19 cornet section! I think that reeks of insufficient information given to an adjudicator. This award has some notariety in our circles and a not inconsiderable monetary value as well (for anybody unemployed at least). end of whinge. Just like to say hear, hear Stephen...
