There's a little rhyme that may help .....

LEFT, LEFT, I had a good job and I LEFT, I LEFT because I couldn't keep
RIGHT, I had a good job and I LEFT.  (Obviously starting marching with the
left foot).  If you say that - first of all the whole group out loud,
making sure that the feet are down at the appropriate word, then practise
saying it to yourself, then add in the instruments.

I used to play in a Bugle & Drum marching band (many years ago) and it was the
rhyme that was used to teach us marching in step.
