'Open' and 'Concert of the Century'

Once again the Birmingham Symphony Hall proved to be an excellent venue with
a great atmosphere both in the hall and in the foyer, trade stands, etc.
The Concert of the Century was a good concept if slightly too long. At
least being non-competitive meant we did not have to wait for the results!

For once, (love it or hate it) 1812 made an appropriate finale. Elgar
Howarth's narration of Mortimer's Dream painted a vivid picture with so few
words. Thank you Richard Evans and JJB for ensuring the day did not become
too serious and thank you Marple for demonstrating that the aim of the game
is not to see who can produce the most decibels.

Congratulations to the organisers. This is a format which should be
repeated from time to time. Just in case you missed the earlier mailing,
highlights of the concert and the winning performance of ...Dove Descending
can be heard on BBC Radio 3 at 1300hrs on Sunday.
