Regarding Ian's remarks on marching tympani, back in the pre-DCI
days of drum corps over here, Typms could only be used if they
were marched on to the field - after that they could be placed
stationary in front of the field and be played.  Not very 
practical as it took a body to march each timp, and they were
real back breakers.  Never saw anybody march them on a parade
route!  We also were not allowed to use horses!
