Powder coating is one solution - totally inert and doesn't wear off - they use it to protect offshore oil rigs - but TAKE CARE! Don't put a clear powder coat over raw brass - it cracks and splits (similar to stress lines) after a period of time. As it turns out, the clear coat is meant as an extra coat to go over a colour to deepen the colour and should not be put on bare metal. As a result TiBaReed mpc's are now white (for purity of course) rather than clear over polished brass. Latest test results show no ill effects after 6 months of playing. Another warning - specify a very thin coating as a thick coating can change the mpc sound - a flugel mpc now has a harsher trumpet type sound - therefore back to the lathe.
