Gold plating is certainly an ideal alternative as long as the gold used is
of good hard quality .  i.e.: 24crt dark yellow gold.

I have 24crt gold plated three cornet mp's successfully with no noticeable
tonal changes; in fact I have had the whole cornet (Eb Sop) plated in the
same material.

You may need to consider the cost involved in plating, but if you have your
trusty old "can't do without" mouthpiece, it may be justified, and
especially now as gold is at a low on the world market.

To gold plate a cornet mouthpiece in this quality would be around $50 Aus.

No-one on this thread's mentioned silver plating, or even solid silver,
so far. Is this done?  After all, flautists often use solid silver heads
("better sound" - hmm)

.. or gold-plating of course...
