Brass in school etc.

Dear all,

One problem that I have recently encountered in the Scottish Borders is
that all trombonists are taught to play in bass clef, which means that th
ey
can read only the bass trombone parts in a brass band. This is presumably

because the parts trombonists play at school are in bass clef, but it lea
ds
to a shortage of trombonists able to play the trombone 1/2 parts, and a
proliferation of bass trombonists (what could be worse?!?!?!?)
     ; )

Upon leaving school, there are far fewer opportunities for trombonists in

orchestras/wind bands than in brass bands (in this region at least). I do

not advocate teaching solely in treble clef, but see no reason why trombo
ne
players should not be taught to read in more than one clef. (After all,
pianists can learn to read at least five notes in each of two clefs
simultaneously)!
