Dear List, Please can someone suggest a way to ease my dilemma I have just returned tonight from band practice (By the way I am the musical director of the Riddings 'B' Band) and I am writing this mail feeling sorry for myself and also the members of my band. The Riddings 'B' Band is the learner section of the Riddings Band, it consists of twenty three young people and three older members all of which are great people with a whole load of enthusiasm for music. Every week we have a great time at band pactice and after being musical director for the last six years I consider myself very lucky to be involved with them. We also perform concerts in our own right - this year we have performed at local garden parties and school fetes and we even represented our local Rotary Club at their Area Young Peoples Music Concert at Nottingham University. Our Senior Band (The Riddings Band) has a comitted youth policy and actively encourages the 'kids' with joint concerts etc. So you may ask yourself 'What is my problem?' Well it goes something like this!! My band would love to take part in competitions - tonight we handed out next years fourth section test piece and the band loved it. BUT we haven't got enough 'tackle' to play it. Our senior band is self supporting and does not have many spare instruments (3 cornets, two horns and two trombones) so everything we play on at 'B' Band is begged or borrowed from schools etc. or belongs to the player (because their parents bought an instrument so that they could have the opportunity to play). To be able to function properly we need some Basses (at the moment we only have one 'baby' Eb) two baritones and a Flugel Horn. If anyone has any ideas how I may be able to solve my problem I will be grateful for any suggestions or if anyone knows of any old instruments that may be 'gathering dust' in bandrooms or peoples attics that we may be able to borrow please could you let me know - condition is not a problem. It just seems such a shame that when we have such a good bunch of interested young people their talent could be put to waste because of such a seemingly simple problem. Izzy MD Riddings 'B' Band Please look at our homepage www.riddingsband.com P.S. We have tried the National Lottery and have been turned down - our bid is at the moment being reworked. --
