Well you need to bear in mind that applications for less than 100k GBP are now determined by your Regional Arts Board (RAB) who have the power to impose additional criteria over the nationally agreed ones. I suspect that equal opportunities and increasing audiences/participant numbers will be key areas to look at. As we are close to the end of the inital Arts Lottery Funding Scheme, resources are now very limited - much more so than they were two or three years ago. You also need to be aware that some RABs have a stated policy of giving priority to art forms who have previously done less well out of the Lottery which means that brass bands as a whole will suffer in those regions (we have had over 20m GBP which has gone to over 1/3rd of brass bands in the UK). Bands in former coalfield areas may do better as these areas are being targeted for more funds at the moment. There is useful information on RABs and funding at: http://www.arts.org.uk Bands should also note the the New Opportunites Fund (the National Lottery's sixth good cause) has money for out of school hours education and has received fewer arts related applications than they would like. This may provide money to help running a junior band, so long as you are happy to work in partnership with a school or LEA. It is completely seperate from the the Arts Lottery Funds. > We are also wondering whether to `go it alone` or to ask a specialist who > has been successful with gaining funding for other bands. Well I would certainly advise talking very closely with staff at your RAB and trying to understand their underlying message - they want successful applications so should help if you approach them the right way. The BFBB may also still provide advice through their national helpline if it is still running (01422 250323). Personally, I have raised over 425k GBP since 1994, mainly from trusts and the Lottery. If any band is thinking of applying and wants to e-mail me a draft of their application I will galdly cast an eye over it and give my comments (for free) so long as they understand that I may not be able to respond instantly!
