Thank you John for remembering about the letter - one of the reasons the band wore the shirts is that we are on the breadline (and were then, too) and only have about 23-24 jackets. As I said before, I wasn't playing with the band that year due to other commitments, but I went along to watch and thought they looked great! I was so disappointed when the rap on the knuckles came. We always end up having to put the basses in white shirts (when we have basses!) because we can't afford to buy new jackets. A few of our jackets were made to fit some members when they were still at school, and don't even fit the youngsters very well. Mine is far too big, but given the choice between far too big and far too small, I'm happy! I agree that the uniforms when well fitting are very smart, but they are a bit old fashioned, and surely for the brass band world to become more accessible to the general public we could start changing our ways a bit (I don't mean miss out the pub). Professional orchestras look very colourful, but I suppose with our formation we would look untidy - I like the coloured shirt idea, especially if it is arranged either in section or like somebody has done, with set colours and nobody who sits next to each other wears the same colour. I would be much more comfortable wearing just a shirt than a jacket, and I'm sure many people would too. I wonder if SABBA still consider this rule that full uniform is to be worn to hold - does anybody know? If so, can we have a definition of uniform please, as the committee at that time didn't consider people all wearing the same thing to be a uniform as such! Some of the members of the band considered the letter to be a disgrace for the band, but others (including myself) were merely annoyed about it! Anyway, I'm getting off my soapbox now! Thanks again for remembering the letter and showing I'm not just mad (although I'm mad anyway, I play in a brass band).
