RE: Tuning problems.

David

Universities that have a degree in Flugelism have a compulsory component in
years 2 - 3 : Metalwork 1 & 2 which covers the ability to use a hacksaw,
silver solder and generally rebuild a horn to your own shape.

Mine started out as a HP B&H. Hacksaw and 4" of tube got it to LP. Drill a
few holes and pinch a few water keys off a baritone (wonder if he ever
worked out they were gone) and you can control the juice problem in the 1st
& 3rd slide. Never grease the 2nd slide so that it can fall out and that
solves the juice problem there. Never use oil on the valves - the more air
leaking in that region makes it easier to lip the notes in.

Practice exercises that give flexible chops especially jazz bends, slides
and glisses (big bore mouthpieces make them easier) then rely on your ear
to hit the note you want.

BUT BEWARE - if you ever play a good one where you don't have to work your
butt off to hit the note correctly - the shock can turn you to drink!

On an allied subject - anyone have any hints for pedals on the Flug - we
have another two octaves down but a real gap from the E to C# - or is some
more metalwork needed.
