Then why is it not an octave and a fifth higher? How does it come to lose
another semitone? And why doesn't it work the same way on other instruments,
such as (in my experience) Euphonium and Trombone?

I tried fingering the double pedals as for a major 7th higher tonight on
Euph, and it does work better. My trombone still resists though!
