The end of Pedals:'Where it matters

Pedals: Like anything else and everything else, "less is more". Its just good judgement on
behalf of the player (and conductor) that brings out the class.

I'd suggest that the two most awesome concert pieces, with effective pedaling are:
"Procession to the Minster" and "Suite Gothic". Get those two in the same concert, and
you'll have most bass players hyper-ventilating.

Having said that, the only time I ever heard a conductor swear on stage was at the end of
"Pines of Rome", Brierley Hill Civic Centre, Christmas 1993. IMHO, the most excessively
and least effective written pedal parts for bass's.

His precisice words (when a certian bass player stood up one bar too early, before the
climax of the piece) were: "You F----- W----er!". Luckily for me, the audience was too
absorbed with a shower of balloons to notice what was said, or who was standing and when.
So as not too look completely absurd, the 2nd BBb realising what I'd done also stood with
me. Thus also receiving the harsher side of a welsh accent!

Talk about poxy crowd pleasing gimiks - band sitting, then band standing, then soloists
standing only, then balloons etc.. etc.. What was that about class? Then again, that's
another topic.
