To anyone who did not see the "Watchdog" programme and is a bit mixed-up on the subject....it was a "knocking-piece" about Boosey & Hawkes and the quality of lacquer on instruments. It "alleged" that some bands were having a lot of trouble with the lacquer on new instruments....particularly Basses....with dreaded black spots appearing on them. (the instruments, not the players !). A chief executive of the company admitted that they had problems which apparently is caused by condensation under the lacquer...appearing as black splodges. Two bands..one from Crewe and another from Scotland were featured in the prog. complaining that their bands were now callled "brass and silver bands" and looked silly with a mixture of different coloured instruments. Anne Robinson the presenter had a go at the company claiming they had made millions of pounds from the lottery grants.....and said a tuba now costs 6000. It ended up with the executive promising to put everything right if someone had a problem.....and advising anyone worried to purchase a silver plated instrument (which costs more). I have noticed that some dealers have "steered me" away from B. and H. instruments and do not print discounted prices. Incidentally...the programme was nothing to do with improving (or damaging) your health.) Hope this is of some use. Cheers. David Williams. --
