I always thought that this was because the cornet section was so enormous that it would only fit in that way, but there's a valid musical argument that says that the section will play more as a team if they can hear each other (which they will be able to do better as they are blowing straight at each other - poor conductor!). I've also just remembered that when I used to help out with Blewbury Band (when I was about 10), they used to sit like that too. I went along once in the summer, and they were sitting with the cornets right round the front. I think there's someone from Blewbury on the list - is this right, or was that just an exception?
