A breve with a stem is a long - twice (or possibly three times?) the value of a breve. They were popular with mediaeval writers, but have been out of fashion for 450 years or so. There was also a longer value called the duplex (or double) long; confusingly, this could be either 2 or 3 longs long. Dave Taylor --
