RE: Early trumpets.



Natural trumpets (and horns) play on the harmonic series only
so to play a scale you have to start at the 8th harmonic
The 7th harmonic is an out of tune Bb and the 11th
is an out of tune f. by using the holes you can make the
Bb a b natural and the f an f# etc.
Some modern natural trumpets add additional holes to add
other harmonics and to tune other notes.
Judiciously played there is no reason to be out of tune.
It requires much practice.
Crispian Steele-Perkins is  a great player in this style.
the sound is quite different from modern instruments.
