Hi David Looking at the results as a whole and the range of marks in the entertainment and presentation department it does seem to have been a most unusual year. The big disadvantage of this contest's system is that the entertainment marks - out of 60 - do make such a disproportionate difference mathematically. Each of the 3 entertainment judges marks out of 20 - therefore each mark off represents 5% of their total marks. The music judges mark out of 100 therefore each mark is 1%. This how a band like Sellers for example - who came 9th in the playing can come 5th overall by getting a huge boost from the differential in the entertainment marks. Ransome's who beat Sellers by 8 points in the playing came 6th by having lower entertainment marks. In my opinion, and I am sure that others will disagree, entertainment contests should be first and foremost about good playing and good music. Presentation and deportment are important but, lets face it, arseing around on stage shouldn't win contests. Yes, I know we did a Village People routine last year (that doesn't mean I enoyed it) - as they say on the Fast Show - I'll get my coat.
